Dramatic Adventure Theatre, The Puppet Kitchen, and a handful of designers & actors recently came together for a 3 day workshop to investigate design ideas for ‘A Girl without Wings’. This is a little video that we put together from that event.
And as I type this, the designers are meeting again to discuss the discoveries made — very exciting!
Let’s make shadow puppets!
Today (October 19th), from 12-2pm, Dramatic Adventure Theatre and our friends at Abingdon Theatre will be hosting a few tables at the Fashion District Arts Festival (Broadway & 40th).
We will be making Condor shadow puppets with kids and the young at heart! This is so much fun for the kids as they will get to cut out, color, and watch their Condors fly!
This is also a great opportunity to learn about DAT’s Nov. 17th Pop Up Playhouse reading of ‘A Girl without Wings’ — an interspecies love story between an Andean Condor and a spunky young girl, a play which was developed on location in the Ecuadorian Andes.

PS - Abingdon Theatre will also have children’s theatre performances happening during the event, which will add to the fun for the young ones!

I find this drawing particularly interesting as we explore puppetry in A GIRL WITHOUT WINGS, despite the fact that there are no bears in our play — the puppet is an extension of the puppeteer, the two are one.

The importance of breathing life into a puppet.
Some Days I feel like I’m the puppet and the birds are pulling the strings. This play certainly has a mind of its own!
DAT just received confirmation of our space at the Edinburgh Fringe this summer. I was there 13 years ago as a performer…can’t wait to bring our little piece of puppet-tastic American-Ecuadorian mashup to the castled city.
